Bread Can Make You HappyBread can make you happy and not just because it tastes so good.

Research at the University of York and Hull York Medical School has found a connection between depression and low levels of folate (folate comes from leafy vegetables, beans, cereal and sunflower seeds).  Dr. Simon Gilbody and his research team examined 11 previous studies involving 15,315 subjects to come to their conclusion.

What does this have to do with the title of this post: “Bread Can Make You Happy?”  Read on…

In May 2007, the Food Standards Agency recommended to UK Health Ministers the introduction of mandatory supplementing of either bread or flour with folic acid to impede neural tube defects, which can lead to miscarriage, neonatal death or lifelong disability.  The anti-depression effect has now been added to that list.

According to Dr. Gilbody:

“Our study is unique in that for the first time all the relevant evidence in this controversial area has been brought together. Although the research does not prove that low folate causes depression, we can now be sure that the two are linked.

Interestingly, there is also some trial evidence that suggests folic acid supplements can benefit people with depression. We recommend that large trials should be carried out to further test this suggestion.”

This same research team has also found that people with depression often have a gene that hinders the processing of folate.  Folate has been connected to the production of serotonin, the “feel good” brain hormone.

Serotonin helps regulate anger, aggression, body temperature, mood, sleep, vomiting, sexuality and appetite. Serotonin shortage increases aggression, angry behavior, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, migraine, irritable bowel syndrome, tinnitus, fibromyalgia, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders and intense religious experiences.

Countries that have made the fortification of flour with folic acid mandatory include the US, Canada and Chile, while the move is currently being debated by regulators in Australia, New Zealand and Ireland.

    Folic Acid = vit B9(folate) is needed in dosages of 5mg (in supplemental tablet form) daily. It is not good enough at all to add to flour for bread, especcially for fibromyalgia with accompanying IBS and 99% of sufferers having no conversion from Tryptophan, down to Serotonin and Melotinin Hormones, as this condition esp, needs GLUTEN FREE SPELT SEED FLOUR, WHICH THE WORLD SUPPLY OF HAS BEEN DRASTICALLY DEMISHED! All the other conditions named in your article, are part of what every active fibromyalgia sufferer experiences,so I think this is a v poorly written article. Folic acid is needed as a pre-cursor to VitD3,(osteporotic people need 50,000 i.u. per week of D3), fibromyalgia sufferers need 1000mg per day, which together with Calcium Glycinate -2 caps taken 1 hr after breakfast and dinner,(but flic acid and D3 only after breakfast daily), allows for good bone turnover, and should be included in both male and females from age 16-20 and onwards. Serotonin needs D3, folic acid, and a plethera of antiageing supplemental assistance via 5HTP, St. John’s Wort, Tryptophan, SAMe, along with a diet high in the leafy veg and fruits that contain mainly tryptophan to assist the Serotonin, Tryptophan, Melotonin hormones to neuro transmit from “THE 2ND BRAIN” IE THE INTERIC NERVOUS SYSTEM SITUATED IN THE LEFT REGION OF COLON, to reach the 1ST BRAIN! Life would really be simple if folic acid added to cake flours, wheat flours etc to make would do the trick. Obviously it is better to add folate than not to, but please do not take your readers for dummies – we who are the ‘survivors’ as well as those who are still the sufferers of all the conditions you mention, need proper clinical nutritionist to add to their teams of rehad exercise therpists, CBT/NLP Therpists, Cranio Sacral Therapists, Bowen+Myofascial therapists to cut through the myofascial trigger muscle pain, to assist the Serotonin movements, besides added supplemental help daily and much more empowering knowledge, along with taught breathing and meditation relaxation techniques! These will be the Functional Medicine/Integrative approach to teaching people with little knowledge about their conditions, to grow and WIN THE BATTLE in the correct way. I have been coming up 2010, in remission for 18 years, am now a Complete Life+NLP+Addictions Counsellor/Clinical Nutritionist/Anti-ageing Consultant, Head of Fibromyalgia Support Network Southern Africa since inception 1997, and so grateful I have been given the privilage to have learned from my sufferance, to educate others how to ve VICTORS.
